Am I happy?

Sure. It's a quick, easy answer to the broadest question of the evening. My candidate won.

But there's also a deep sadness that I can't shake, and only part of it has to do with the likely passage of the disgraceful Prop 8.

In 2000, my first presidential election, I also won. But that was taken from me, and you, by a greedy, small-minded, willfully ignorant idiot and his cronies.

This is the second time I have had to watch John McCain lose, and just like in 2000, I couldn't watch when he accepted his loss.

There are differences, of course. I can, and have argued that the senator did not have to adopt the very strategies that the idiot used against him in 2000 for his 2008 bid for the White House. I have also clearly stated my feelings on his unsettling-ly political pick of Sarah Palin.

I have heard throughout the campaign that this is not the same man from 2000. I believe that. I also believe that the McCain from 2000, after eight years watching the appalling and heartbreaking incompetence of this administration, broke.

Can I blame him? Not for breaking, no. I can, and did, for the way he behaved afterward, and maybe I will again, in a couple days. But in 2000, we all lost. In eight years some of us lost our homes, some of us lost our jobs, some of us lost our souls, and some of us lost people we love.

That sense of loss returned sharply for me tonight. So while I'm happy, and maybe I've even caught a little bit of that hope that's been going around, tonight I was also reminded of the grief I still have over what should have never been.

She could have tutored immigrants. She could have joined the international relations club and sponsored cultural awareness programs. As an adult, she could have done something - anything - to interact with people of other cultures. She didn't. She made her choices. There is no right or wrong, but being self insulated from the world outside one's community is a choice. It isn't about not having rich parents.

All of us make choices. However, implying that an interest in travel and in international relations is a choice that can only be made by rich kids is a new low.
I hate debates. Well, let me clarify. I hate debates where one person speaks intelligently and the other speaks in meaningless sound bites which, depressingly enough, Americans seem to respond to... I'm looking at you, vote-against-your-own-economic-interests-every-time Kansas.

I am, however, kinda looking forward to the vice presidential debate. Has anybody else been anticipating Dan Quayle-ishness from the hockey mom?

But all that aside, I was going to watch the debate tonight and be extremely unhappy doing so. I get nervous for the smart people, because they're usually too dumb to respond to the unfair (and usually complete bullshit) attacks from the other side.

-Note: I am being deliberately vague here in my terms "smart" and "dumb" but let me make sure I am crystal clear on this- smart = Barack Obama, and dumb = John McCain. And you so freaking know it.

Then I realized, I don't have to watch the debate. I don't have to, because I am not a so-called "undecided" voter. I already know the fundamental differences between these two people, and there's nothing left to decide. If nothing else, two words should help all you "undecideds" out there, and this time I don't mean lithium and depakote.

Supreme Court

Or if that doesn't help, how about

Your Money

Be smart, people.

You know, the word "maverick" has several entries in my thesaurus. I would like to take this opportunity to remind some of you that one of them is "cowboy." Well, we all know what happens when a "cowboy" is "elected" president, don't we?

The economy goes to hell, we invade sovereign nations that didn't attack us, we torture people, we actually say- out loud, mind you- freedom fries, we don't take care of our soldiers, we spy on our own- it's warrantless now, not quite as fun as wireless but you didn't want your Fourth Amendment rights anyway- we reward greedy and incompetent corporations, we allow George Lucas to remake Star Wars again and again and yes, again, we give to the rich and keep on giving but joke's on all of us, right, because the "maverick" picked a woman to be his running mate! Nevermind the inescapable fact that were it not for us liberal non-cowboys, the woman would never have even been considered by the "maverick's" party.

Let me tell you something. The fact that this race is even close is disgraceful.
